Microsoft has been battling with Adobe over development tools for Rich Internet Applications – RIA's – and they've finally raised the stakes.
Releasing the very first public beta version of Silverlight 1.0 RIA yesterday, they've allowed users to try out the software plug-in for the very first time, and developers to release applications specially built for Silverlight formally.
Users can run Silverlight via a plug-in from Microsoft , and it works on Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari, and Mozilla's Firefox.
Also announced was a component for Silverlight that supports streaming media, which is what many are excited about.
Silverlight will compete for RIA developers attention with Adobe's Flash, but many analysts have expressed doubts that Silverlight will make a significant dent in Adobe's position in the market in the near future.
