Teen Charged Over AOL Database Hacks
Monday, April 30, 2007 at 18:17 by Peter Smith
A seventeen year old living in New York as been changed with computer tampering, computer trespass, and criminal possession of computer materials, among other things. He allegedly broke into AOL networks, and the databases that contained vital customer information, and infected them with a malicious script that transferred the information to his computer.

The boy faces four felony charges and one misdemeanour charge, and was arraigned on Monday. He is still detained.

The alleged acts cost AOL more than $500,000, and it's still not clear if any personal information was taken, as AOL declines to comment.

According to the DA's office, the boy claimed that he had only done it to attempt to get his account back after AOL shut it down, but there have been claims that he is part of a hacking ‘group' who have targeted AOL in the past.

Rumours have been going around he had downloaded generic over-the-counter hacking script to get into the AOL database, and if this were true, it wouldn't say much for AOL's security.

There is still no comment on what AOL is doing to fix the problems.
