Microsoft to charge for Office Beta 2 downloads
Tuesday, August 01, 2006 at 18:31 by Simon Spicer

From Wednesday 2nd August 2006 (6pm PDT), Microsoft will begin to charge users US$1.50 to download a copy of the Office 2007 beta 2.

The company released Beta 2 of Office 2007 in May 2006 and since then its been downloaded more than three million times - 500 per cent more than what was expected. Since its release users have been able to download the package for free but Microsoft has decided to introduce the fee to help offset the cost of downloading from the servers. Users who have already downloaded the software in the past will be able to obtain updates free of charge.

Microsoft plan to release Office 2007 to business customers before the end of the year and to consumers in early 2007. Both of those releases dates for the software package have been delayed from their originally scheduled dates due to problems with the user interface.
