A recent report by Eugene Kaspersky of Kaspersky Lab claims the future of the anti-virus market could be shaped by criminals and Microsoft.
Over the past few years, the anti-virus industry has undergone some major changes. The market leader has changed, MCAfee has lost ground to Symantec and some independent anti-virus companies have either disappeared from the market or have been taken over.
The report says there will be three deciding factors which affect the condition of the anti-virus industry.
• The criminalization of the Internet
• Various types of criminal activity
• Antivirus protection from Microsoft
With Microsoft starting to focus on the security solutions market the anti-virus industry could be heading in to a state of shock. Microsoft plan to eventually launch three anti-virus solutions, the first of which is rumoured to be Antivirus for home PC's. The next of their solutions, still in the planning stage, is anti-virus for workstations and then anti-virus for MS Exchange. The MS Exchange version is rumoured to be using the multi-engine Antigen from Sybari.
Its remains to be seen how much of a player Microsoft will be in the anti-virus market, however they will undoubtedly have an impact on the future of existing anti-virus companies and their market shares. Only time will tell.
