Ebay to try Contextual adverts
Monday, June 12, 2006 at 19:13 by Darren Chew

Ebay are said to be introducing Contextual adverts to help promote their online auctions. Working a lot like Google's AdSense and even having a similar name, AdContext.

The system will search WebPages signed up to its advertising program and read keywords from various pages. The keywords then affect what adverts are served to that webpage with the aim of trying to target adverts towards what people are on that site for, rather then random pointless adverts.

With Google's AdSense program, the owner of the website hosting the advert usually receives a small payment for allowing the advert on their site. With this new Ebay AdContext, the owner of the website is rumoured to receive a percentage of the items sale price. This could encourage a lot of people using Google's AdSense to switch over to the new Ebay system.

Even though Ebay are introducing this Contextual system they say they are not in direct competition with Google's AdSense.
