The cost of Domain names could be on the increase
Monday, June 12, 2006 at 18:35 by Simon Spicer

There is currently a debate running about the legality of a proposed deal between ICANN and VeriSign.

The deal could allow verisign to raise the fees on .com domain names by up to 7% a year for 4 years, they would not need to improve their service or justify the increase in fees in any way whatsoever. Companies that sell domain names to consumers are unhappy about the increase in fees.

However, the increase only amounts to an extra cost of $1.86 per domain per year, and if the deal is approved it wont take hold until 2012.

Most people and small businesses are not very concerned about the raise, however companies and individuals with substantial domain name portfolios with 1000 or more domains in, are probably a little concerned about this deal.
