$250 Wii
Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 22:01 by Darren Chew
Nintendo has announced the price of its next generation video games console Wii, will not exceed $250.

With the exact release date and price of the Wii console still unknown, some game developers may have let slip a rough release date. The Ant Bully, due for release at the end of July 2006 on other platforms, has been given a November 2006 release date by the games developers. Although release dates of games can change quite dramatically, it's hopefully a good clue to a rough release date of what looks to be a games console focused on the fun side of gaming.

With the Nintendo Wii specification looking rather poor compared to the likes of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the eagerly awaited Sony Playstation 3, Nintendo seem to focus on a different side of gaming. Not only does the new console look fantastic, it's approximately the size of three stacked DVD's it comes with its crazy Wii remote. The Wii remote is wireless and motion-sensitive remote that offers a complete new approach to gaming and how we all play. Personally I can't wait for the release of this console, purely for the Wii remote.

Fingers crossed it wont be to long.

$250, no HD gaming , inferior graphics, inferior processing power, no HD DVD functionality, no online platform, no inter-operability with PCs, not designed to be a media hub... spend the extra $44 for a 360...and who knows, that price difference might not exist by the time the Wii launches... a glorified pointing stick is not a good enough reason to forego all the benefits of the 360.

an arguement against that is... in uk the xbox360 is 250-300 pounds, the Wii will be 100-120 pounds. the games will be cheaper as they are less demanding in graphics and realism, the lifecycle to make them will be shorter, so that means more games, released faster. It is more likely that the average user will be able to afford more Wii games than xbox or ps3 console owners. Also being cheap means that actually owning another console with it becomes a viable option. The console price will go down after the release and so will always be cheaper to buy than the others. there is a good chance that preventing developers making super realistic games means they focus better on their playability and enjoyment..look at the gameboy...that never suffered

I dont know if you can compare the handheld market with the console market. One market caters to consumer expectations for the home, which has far more factors to consider than for mobile gaming. Multimedia functionality, Networking and Online gaming is a factor that the mobile market do not really have to worry about. The gamecube didnt have a DVD player in the last generation, and in this generation, it doesnt have HD DVD or networking capabilities with other devices or computers... The PSP approached portable gaming as a multimedia and gaming play thingee...and as far as I can tell, the broad market dosnt care too much for an all-in-one solution for mobile gaming and mobile media. Gamers are still buying gameboys, Multimedia people are still buying ipods and 3G phones...

The only reason I can see to get one is if someone already owns an Xbox 360. $250 for what basically is an original Xbox minus the Live service, but it does have a wireless/motion-sensitive VCR remote... Sure some games will be fun (Zelda, Metriod, etc) but lets look at Nintendo's previous console the Gamecube. Cheaper system, inferior hardware, and the usual Nintendo launch line-up. The problem was that no 3rd party developers supported the system and so GC owners where forced to wait up to 5 months for new first party titles such as Metroid to be released (GC owners have been waiting over 2 years for Advance Wars and Zelda to be released!). Here we go again except Nintendo now has a wireless/motion sensitive remote. It's sad that a remote is pretty much the ONLY thing a company can advertise for a new system. How long will the "wow, a new controller" buzz last and people realize that their are no new notable first party releases for 6 months! I think I'll stick with my 360: High Def graphics, can connect to PC gamers online, Xbox Live, Halo 3, Gears of War, Call of Duty 2&3, Ghost Recon, import your own music into your games, Marketplace, Game content downloads, and the list seriously goes on and on. It's amazing to me that a system can come out with a motion sensitive controller and call themselves the most innovative thing since wheels on luggage. Nintendo really hasn't done anything lately except create false hype which I think is reflected in their lack luster sales.

Nintendo did a brilliant marketing job this time around. Honestly, though, they have failed my expectations ever since the Nintendo 64, and I never plan on buying a Nintendo system again unless it is an absolute bargain. Sure, I love Mario Kart the likes, but I have a PC and the kinds of PC games that will release for the 360 will bring improvements to console gaming that Nintendo just isn't capable of. Bioshock, for example, is the type of game that many console players have never had the chance to play and will probably flock to once they get a taste of it on the 360. Anyway, I don't see Nintendo doing well after the first couple of years when the other systems come down in price and trounce its underpowered graphics. In addition, the Wii will not be able to process some of the beloved "gameplay" enhancements that faster processors afford (richly detailed persistent game worlds, realistic AI, largely destructible environments, etc.). After all, who would argue that Half-Life 2 merely has better graphics than the orginal Half-Life and other than that is the same game?

what can the Wii remote do really? It moves the target crosshairs for shooters....ummm....wave a sword around (or any hand held weapon for that matter.....ummm....go fishing......wave an axe...oh, sorry, that falls under waving a handheld weapon around..... the controller might prove more limiting than liberating for the console in terms of games in the longrun. i think the console will

£250 for 50 dollars more, you get an xbox 360 core package, the system is technocially superior and well considering what wii has and is lacking, I think xbox 360 is more substantial.

not exceed $250. that is $220 or $200 is possible.

whenever the 'marketing department' and 'PR team' say less than $250, it usually means just short of $250, meaning you will either save 1-5 cents (249.99-249.95) $200 is very likely to be only a wet dream. I doubt Nintendo will take a $50 hit in the pocket if its being announced at costing "less than $250".

Wii will have all the games available from the previous consoles, and it has ports for my game cube controller. Wii is the superior choice over Sony and Xbox is the Superior Choice over Wii. Sorry Sony you're too phuİking expensive.

I've researched this for more than a year. I became more of a gamer on nintendo. It is a virtual simulator. It is like if you were in real action. Either you're Playing sports, or attacking the enemies, this is more real life than the PS3. Go to gamefaqs.com for whats coming out. Nintendofreak10
