.mobi enjoys smooth launch
Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 21:02 by Peter Smith

dotMobi (the informal name of mTLD Top Level Domain, Ltd.), the Internet address created for mobile phones, announced the successful start of mobile domain registration today. During Sunrise Registration, May 22-29, members of mobile industry associations have an opportunity to
register their trademark names as a .mobi mobile domain. Trademark holders may register their trademarks as .mobi names starting June 12 and individual users may start filing for registration starting August 28.

"The launch of this unique mobile domain is moving ahead at full speed and on schedule," said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi.

"It is with great enthusiasm that we congratulate our supporters, registrars, registrants and mobile users. We are confident that dotMobi will revolutionize the optimized mobile Internet and positively impact consumers in the mobile community. We're all working together to make history, one .mobi domain name at a time."

dotMobi is backed by leading mobile operators, network and device manufacturers, and Internet content providers, Nokia and Vodafone.

dotMobi was designated as the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain by ICANN in July 2005.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed by dotMobi to verify the .mobi Sunrise domain name registration processes.

I don't get it. We now have a separate domain for mobile devices, but the .xxx for porn-related sites got rejected? Is it because the porn industry didn't want it, and the mobile device industry did? Which leads to the conclusion that ICANN listens to whoever's got money? And other than manage domain names for mobile devices, .mobi provides...what?
