.XXX Domain name rejected by Internet Regulator
Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 10:42 by Peter Smith

Internet governing agency ICANN today voted against a proposed agreement for a .XXX top level domain. The application was proposed by the ICM Registry.

The application has received much public comment and detailed discussion by the ICANN Board. Reflecting the diversity of views this application has generated, the Board discussion focused on the criteria for the .XXX domain name, sponsorship, and the terms of the contract proposed by ICM, including compliance issues related to key terms associated with public policy concerns.

ICM had requested that the ICANN Board vote on the proposed contract at this meeting.

Opponents of the plan felt it would endorse pornography, while porn industry opponents expressed concern over the level of state control.

ICANN's chief Paul Twomey stated the decision was not driven by political motive. "The heart of the decision today was not driven by a political consideration," he told the Associated Press news agency.

ICANN's Board voted 9 to 5 against the proposed agreement.
