Microsoft today released its new Windows Live Messenger beta to the general public. Windows Live Messenger is the next generation of MSN Messenger, the most widely used instant messaging service with more than 230 million customers worldwide. Windows Live Messenger was previously available for beta testing by invitation only.

Windows Live Messenger includes customer driven feature enhancements that make it even easier for consumers to stay in touch with the people and information that matter most to them.

"Windows Live Messenger is changing the way people communicate and stay in touch," said Martin Taylor, corporate vice president of Windows Live and MSN at Microsoft. "With powerful sharing, collaboration and communications tools designed to put the user firmly in control of their communications experience, Windows Live Messenger is a key part of the foundation of Windows Live. The several million consumers already in the managed beta have been giving us great feedback, and we're excited to make the beta of Windows Live Messenger to users worldwide."

As well as a new look and feel, Windows Live Messenger has some neat new features, notably offline instant message which allows you to receive PM's whilst offline. Other features include:

  • Windows Live Call with Verizon Web Calling service.
  • Cordless phones designed exclusively for Windows Live Messenger.
  • Windows Live Contacts
  • Unified contacts.
  • Sharing Folders.
  • Offline instant message
  • Video conversation

MSN now attracts more than 465 million unique users worldwide per month. With localized versions available globally in 42 markets and 21 languages.
