On this months 'patch Tuesday' Microsoft released a series of updates and fixes to there XP operating system. One of the patches (KB908531), aimed at closing a vulnerability in windows explorer, that could allow remote code execution has resulted in a range of problems arising for Microsoft.
Microsoft have been quick to add an update to there website warning about the possible problems the patch might cause and listing possible solutions on each problem.
The main problems being listed on the Microsoft TechNet site are:
• You cannot access special folders such as "My Documents" or "My Pictures."
• Office files that are located in the "My Documents" folder cannot be opened.
• If you open a file by clicking Open on the File menu, the application stops responding.
• Microsoft Office applications stop responding when you try to save or to open Office files in the "My Documents" folder.
• When you type an address in the Address box in Microsoft Internet Explorer, nothing happens.

The Microsoft TechNet site also lists the cause of the problem being Verclsid.exe and goes on to say:
The Verclsid.exe program validates shell extensions before they are instantiated by the Windows shell or by Windows Explorer. On some computers, the Verclsid.exe program stops responding. The following issues can cause the Verclsid.exe program to stop responding:

• Any HP DeskJet printer that includes a card reader
• HP scanners
• HP cameras
There are a few possible fixes listed, but Microsoft start by saying:
'Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk'.
