HSBC online banking security overhaul
Tuesday, April 04, 2006 at 17:41 by Simon Spicer
With a massive increase of phishing, spyware and viruses on the internet people are growing more concerned about their details going amiss while using online services (such as online banking).

In order to increase the security of their Business Internet Banking, HSBC will be issuing their customers with security devices (similar to those used in Authentication and Credential Management within networking). The new device, which is about the size of a lighter, will replace the current digital certificates and offers increased protection against risks such as phishing and spyware by generating a unique security number each time you log in.

As well as the increased security this device offers, it also allows increased flexibility meaning customers are no longer tied to digital certificates, allowing you to access your account(s) from any computer connected to the internet. It does however mean you have yet another thing to add to your pocket / purse.

Whether this device will be well received and be picked up by other banks or if the device will be released to all HSBC Internet Banking Customers is yet to be seen.
