New French law proposal could revolutionise music downloads
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 16:33 by Andy Holliday
French members of parliament are set to vote on a new rule which will enable downloads to play on any MP3 player regardless of which download service is used.

The potential new law in could shake-up the sale of online music by forcing companies into choosing between making their downloads compatible or shutting down in France entirely.

At present, music formats used by most online stores force consumers to use a particular make of player to listen to their downloads.

So far neither Apple or Microsoft, among others, have commented. Also, even if the bill is passed by French MPs / lawmakers it still has to be approved by France's Senate which could take several more weeks.

Do you think this is a good idea? Please let us know your opinions in the comments form below.
