Shelved plans to create a 'red-light' zone on the Internet by grouping all porn sites under the .xxx domain name could possibly be revived after two Democrat Senators, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Max Baucus of Montana, introduced a 11-page bill titled "Cyber Safety for Kids Act of 2006."
The bill calls on the US Department of Commerce to work with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is a non-profit organisation that oversees domain names. Both departments would look at developing an exclusive zone that would contain material thought to be "harmful to minors".
This material includes any form of "communication, image, article, recording or other obscene matter, including actual or simulated sexual acts and the lewd exhibition of the genitals or post-pubescent female breast".
In a statement, Pryor said that Internet pornographers should be charged a levy of 25 percent, "By corralling pornography in its own domain, our bill provides parents with the ability to create a 'do not enter zone' for their kids," the statement said. The bill suggests that .xxx serve as a domain name for these materials, but does not absolutely require it.
