Apple has made history by selling its one billionth music download, less than two years after we reported their 100 millionth download, and less than three years since the online store first opened it's doors.
Launched originally in America, and available at first only to Mac users, the service is now available in 21 countries around the world and is available to both Mac and Windows users. It has been responsible for the turnaround in Apple's fortunes, and has made the legal music download market a serious reality.
To celebrate the billionth download, which was Speed of Sound by British artist Coldplay, Apple gave their billionth customer a 20-inch iMac, 10 fifth generation iPods and a $10,000 gift card good for any item on the iTunes Music Store. They also established a music scholarship in the name of the billionth customer to the Juilliard School.
The future success of the iTunes store is not in doubt, the question currently going around is what Apple will be doing next on the back of this. Full length films certainly don't seem to be out of the question, and speculation is rife that Apple will be making an announcement along these lines in the very near future. As always, we'll keep you posted.
