| Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at 14:07 by David Vreony |
Vodafone has today announced that is has signed an exclusive deal with the Chinese telecoms manufacturer Huawei Technologies.
The partnership will see Huawei producing Vodaphone-branded 3G handsets for the consumer market across 21 countries and will take place for at least 5 years. The devices will carry only the Vodafone brand name, which is the first time a manufacturers logo will not be on a phone offered by Vodafone to it's consumers.
The deal also marks Huawei's entry in the European handset market, where Vodafone has a large percentage of the GSM market. Vodafone expects the Huawei 3G handsets to be available from September 2006.
Peter Bamford, Chief Marketing Officer, Vodafone Group said: "This agreement with Huawei shows the cost benefits Vodafone's size and global reach can bring to our customers. We will be able to offer even better 3G phones at more competitive prices across our markets."
Ping Guo, Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies said: "This agreement will enable Huawei to become one of the world's leading players in handset development and production. We already have a strong presence in the global market and this agreement offers us a great opportunity to expand into new regions alongside the world's leading mobile community. We consider the partnership with Vodafone as a sign of the trust they have in the quality of our research and production."
The news follows yesterdays announcement that Vodafone have teamed up with search giant Google to provide search functionality with the "Vodafone live!" service.
