64-bit Half Life 2 released by Valve
Monday, December 26, 2005 at 14:06 by Laurence Norah
Valve, creator of the Half Life series of games, has released an updated version of its Source game engine which is optimised to run on 64-bit processors.

The update has been released free of charge to everyone who already owns the Half Life 2 game, and will be delivered via Steam, Valve's content delivery system. Both Half Life 2 and the Lost Coast addon to Half Life 2 will take advantage of the 64-bit optimizations, although Valve has not specified exactly what the difference between the 64-bit and 32-bit versions are.

As the future of PC gaming is undoubtedly 64-bit, this is a logical move for Valve to be making. The next question is when they move towards making games which are optimised for dual core processors, which seems to be the direction that both Intel and AMD are moving. No word on that. In the meantime, if you're a Half Life 2 owner with a 64-bit processor, enjoy this Christmas present for free from Valve.
