Microsoft has launched their new gaming console, the Xbox 360, in Japan this week. This is most likely to be the toughest market for them to crack, given the poor reception that the previous Xbox received and the strength of both Sony and Nintendo in the Japanese market.
The Xbox 360 is available now in Japan, at a retail price of 37,900 yen (roughly $315). The only version available is the premium pack, which comes with a hard drive, a wireless controller, and a number of other accessories.
This is the third market Microsoft has now launched the Xbox 360 in, in a bid to try and woo gamers before Sony's PS3 appears. Unfortunately this strategy is having the side effect of a lack of consoles to satisfy demand, both the US and European regions are suffering from a severe shortage of stock, with many stores unable to even satisfy pre-orders. Microsoft has not revealed how many consoles have been allocated to the Japanese market.
Microsoft is playing a dangerous game here, as in the run up to Christmas many gamers will be disappointed that they have not been able to get the item of their choice. Having to wait until February may turn many away from the Xbox 360, and have them waiting until Sony's PS3 appears. Only time will tell on that one.
