| Creative launches new iPod video 'killer' |
| Thursday, December 08, 2005 at 23:22 by Andy Holliday |
Creative announced earlier its new Zen Vision:M MP3 player featuring a 3.7-inch SharpPix 640x480 resolution and 262k colour screen for music, video playback and photo viewing.
Looking at the specs, it certainly seems to better Apple's iPod in most respects although goes only to a maximum of 30GB rather than the iPod's maximum of 60GB.

The Vision:M also boasts more colours than the iPod; 262,144 opposed to the pod's 'mere' 65,536. They are both a similar size (2.5") and has other handy features such as FM Radio and support for a variety of memory card formats. It also supports additional formats than the iPod including WMA format.
The gadgets also come in a variety of colours and being Windows-based, are largely compatible with Outlook etc for keeping contacts with you on the move. The device also features a handy pop-up QWERTY UI on the screen.
Whether it will overtake the iPod in terms of sales remains to be seen but we certainly think that this has the potential to be a better device than the iPod and looks certain to make a huge dent into Apple's core.

| iPod are compatible with outlook too duh! It isn't even compatible with iTunes!! The player sports a larger battery tyan the iPod, but sacrifices size and weight to do so. Creative doesn't know the market.
Creative lost the battle - stick a fork in them. This is a pathetic rip-off crap player that only spec jockies would buy! |
| yeah right--the ipod will still be king! |
| as much as I'd like Creative to suceed in making a better and cheaper mp3 player, does anyone else think this player looks ugly? More of a toy for kids :( |
| I am all for iPod competition - especially since the launch of the Nano. I think Apple needs some competition, and then maybe they wouldn't send out over priced products with known design flaws. |
| That's just annoying.
They didn't even try to actually think of a new product. Just copy the iPod in a hope it will make poeple want it....
Such a cheap tactic. |
| lol, will this one have a virus too? |
| Well they openly admitted they were backing out of the production of the Zen as ut was "unable to compete with th eiPods" Seems they just want to throw more good money after bad.
Apple is the leader in technology, always has been, always will be. They have won coutless Design Awards and Special Achievement award in design. WHy, because they listen to whatthe market wants, do the absolute best they can to produce a product with usually no expense spared, and have a good end product. Others copy, and to be honest, and ad Steve Jobs has commented on before. It's the hight of praise to have others copy you, it means your product is worth copying, and even if they make some areas of it better, that allows Apple to look at even better products.
It's what drives desing and tecnology forward.
We wouldn't have the sleek MP3 players all the other companies are puttingout if Apple had not had done the iPod, or come up with iTunes, iVideo. Others follow very quickly, and they usually don't have the financial clout behind them to last the distance if the product doesn't go that well in the market place.
Hence Creative dropping the Zen MP3 player recently. The iPod is an amazing piece of technlogy, and it wil sone have HUGE flas storage WAY higher than current models. Sure, every product has some problems, that's notural in ALL technological products, it's just we hear more aboutthe 10 ones that go wrong, not the 2000 ones that go perfectly, if you know what I mean.
Cheers . . . . Merlin53 |

| zen vision:m only has a 2.5in 320x240 screen. You got it confused with the zen vision. |
| i think the ipod video sucks compared to the creative bitches |
| mcr_reaper: well iv looked up this piece of crap and im not impressed.....less memory availability, alot fatter and they have completly copied ipods menu system.....im sorry for all the zen fans out their but this is the lamest piece of junk ever....pretty ugly aswell......maybe the copied menu system is revenge for ipod using nano as a name for their recent pss ipod. Okay the ipod does not support alot of video formats and this one does, it does not matter......u can go online and find lots of programs that convert video formats to suite ipod. BISH BASH BOSH Apple win again..... |
| another piece of creative crap.......its fatter, more ugly and only 30gb availalbe version, ipod kicks its ass........creative have copied the ipod menu system completely......im sorry but cant creative think up of something by themselves? maybe there jst gettin revenge for apple using nanno as a name for one of their ipods. jst giv up Creative because ur jst so not creative anymore....jst boring |
| Creative's menu system was copied by apple, that's why they have the patent for it and why apple may have to pay them. Creative also launched the first mp3 player in 2000, with apple copying their idea (and menus) with the ipod in 2001. Just so all you morons know that. Superior battery life and more format friendly certainly means I'll be choosing this over the iPod. See you iDiots later. |
| Horses for courses. If you want radio or a mains charger (not an unreasonable demand for a player with a £200 + price tag) then you buy Creative's offering. If you want street cred and the sllimmest player you buy the iPod. Either way you can expect to part with some serious £££ if you want to add top-quality earphones...... |

| Yes i've read that many times too. Apperently most of Apples MP3 Player designs have been ripped off from Creative.
Creative had the patents fisrt. So I assume Apple some how got a hold of it and put it out first. I've listened to Audio on ipods and it's not fantastic, but then most people I know with MP3 players in general don't really care about the audio quality, as long as it's listenable.
I even altered the audio settings on my colleagues ipod and she couldn't tell the difference! I could however. I always use my own headphones as they're are much better than the ones you get with devices themselves.
At the end of the day if someone chooses to buy something it's their choice, i couldn't give **** what you do and don't buy, just buy it and be happy with whatever it is. I'll buy what I want for whatever reasons I want. I personaly don't like Apple anything, but I still use mac in my line of work a sometimes where I work that's what they have. I generally don't like buying apple because the stereotype associated with it, that being:
1. you buy apple you're a novice user and it looks good/trendy.
2. you buy apple because you hate everything Microsoft and it's sort of a vengence thing for you, some kind of personal vendetta for Bill Gates.
(why people don't like Bill, i'll never figure out, He's a techie and a businessman, he's made his money, he gives others opportunites, he seems down to earth, he gives more away to charity than the US and UK put together, amazing isn't it?)
However, I do admire Apple's marketing strategy. They've done brilliantly, using famous musicians to help market the ipod was no doubt the "X Factor" that gave the ipod the major appeal boost.
Competition is healthy, it's a good thing. Instead of sticking loyal to one brand I think we should all just push for better, cheaper products. If apple made an MP3 player that I liked, i'd buy it. I just go for whatever I think is the best (suites me best) at the time.
Rant over. |
