.xxx domain names canned by ICANN (for now)
Saturday, December 03, 2005 at 21:51 by Andy Holliday
Controversial plans to introduce .xxx domain names on the internet have been shelved for now by, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The domain for sex sites was approved in June and final negotiations over how it should be run were due to conclude in early December. However ICANN have delayed the decision because they need more time to review reports on .xxx domain names before making a final decision.

Plans for the .xxx have been criticised by many people and organisations, among them former Icann board member Karl Auerbach and US conservative religious groups, including the Family Research Council, however some people argue that at least if all sites moved to .xxx then it would be easier to filter.

Some ciritcs have gone further and said that most sites wouldn't move to the voluntary .xxx anyway because they have well-established sites on .com domains.

No timetable has been given for the final decision.
