Xbox 360 launches amid supply fury
Friday, December 02, 2005 at 22:41 by Andy Holliday
The eagerly anticipated Xbox 360 from Microsoft launched today in the UK, causing a mad scramble for the much sought after games machines.

Fans queued for almost 12 hours yesterday to be the first to get their hands on the most powerful console to hit the shelves yet.

The launch was tainted though by the lack of enough consoles to satisfy demand which was criticised by gamers and retailers alike. This has led to a glut of opportunists to sell the 360s on eBay for more than double their retail value, leaving some loyal Microsoft customers resorting to having to pay over the odds.

Even I.T. Vibe were victims of delays - we ordered ours from Amazon in August (the first day you could order) but due to a failure with their ordering system which we reported on earlier, we have missed out and apologise to our readers as we were going to do a full review. We'll do a review as soon as ours arrives. (If any of you are prepared to sell us a premium unit at cost, please do get in touch!).

After reading through forums and our own comments forms, this problem has angered some would-be customers and some have even threatened to wait until the PS3 comes out, whilst some analysts have said that Microsoft would have sold a million units in America alone if the supply were there.

I'll wait for the January sales. If people are prepared to pay double buying from ebay then that's their choice, they werent forced. Patience truly is a virtue. ~NNova

Hi Andy, Could i be so bold to ask your opion on the sale of Xbox 360's on eBay? I am on of the lucky ones to get my 360 from Game. I sold my old Xbox and 21 games on eBay for £180 to help pay for 360 and get some new titles. Once I saw i could sell it for £500 I placed it on eBay. This will allow me to now buy what I really want, a PC. I have had a number of emails from people saying I am ruining kids xmas by doing this and it in unethical. Have you a take on this? Regards Julian

Personally it's up to the conscience of the individual in my opinion. If you can have it on your conscience that you denied a genuine customer a console just so you can make a profit then it's up to you. I know a lot of people couldn't have it on their conscience, but then again a lot of people could!

Julian- If any parent is giveing you that line then they are a lowsey parent. There was prior knowledge of a shortage (this is how console releases 1 month before Christmas work) so anyone who was not prepared (you had MANY options of preordering availible) then tough. No if you promised you kid an XBOX and now can't deliver, then HAHA, that's what you get... except for the unfortunates who ordered through amazon.uk - to which I really am still rather shocked.

To comment #3 - Do what you want m8 nothing unethical about it. You wouldn't give up your place in a que at a pub for example, if people futher back in the cue were crying they were thirstier than you. If you need a PC then sell the 360 for what you can get, afterall it's a sellers market ATM with the shortages and Xmas so near. It's your choice Good Luck

Please inform watchdog of your problems, they will deal with it and show Amazon up for what they really are if enough people get in touch, to do this, follow the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/contact/ It's the only way we will get dealt with fairly. Good luck TT

look mate you cant go around blaming amazon for this.... they said what happened and it cane be helped... with around 300,000 306s on the shelf you could have told your self that the pre orders would be limited... even if you got dumped into the right warehouse they would still have run out... if u didnt notice they have no 360 in stock atm and still pre orders to fill... meaning that they would have run out of stock any way...

Typical..Americans want all the xbox 360's for themselves..and forget the other regions. MS does not make the parts...people like samsung/ati/IBM do. And if you remember apple left the IBM fold because IBM was too preccupied making xbox 360 chips. There are limited resources out there. Now is it really your contention that All these companies should have built new factories ...just so everyone could have got their xbox 360 on the first day and then closed the plants right after everyone was happy. No, i didn't think so. SO what's a fair compromise... Just what MS chose to do. Release to different markets...and release consoles in a steady stream... Talk about impatience and the intransegence of the young gamer today. eesh!
