SophosLabs has analysed the threat of the first piece of malware to affect the Nintendo DS gaming system and have concluded that owners have no need to panic.
Whilst the two trojans, Troj/DSTahen-A and Troj/DSTahen-B, are potentially capable of wiping a users flash memory and making the machine unbootable, the risk is only present on consoles that have already been modified by the user.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, had the following to say about the trojans:
Nintendo DS owners don't need to rush out to buy anti-virus software for their games console alongside "Super Mario", "Nintendogs" and "Yoshi Touch & Go". These Trojan horses are harmless unless you have deliberately modified your console to let it run unauthorized software. These Trojan horses are not viruses, and cannot replicate. For now Nintendo DS owners need to worry more about scratching their touch screen through excessive playing rather than having their console turned into a useless lump of plastic by these Trojans.
We'd always recommend that users are particularly careful when downloading unofficial software to run on their games consoles, particularly as the console manufacturers are unlikely to fix a modified console as part of the warranty.
