Microsoft launches Hotmail anti-spam toolbar
Friday, June 24, 2005 at 17:45 by Andy Holliday
Microsoft has announced the new 'Safety' bar feature for its Hotmail accounts to warn customers if the email they have received may be spam.

The technology works simply by informing the recipient if the mail has not been sent using the Sender ID technology. This is seen by some as an effort to get people to sign up to the Sender ID service. (Sender ID Framework - SIDF).

Hotmail accounts are widely targetted by unscrupulous spammers and Microsoft rightly need to take measures to address the problem. Microsoft already have features such as impressive spam-filtering technology and blacklists and whitelists but still evidently need to do something to fight the war on spam.

It's not clear however if consumers feel this is the best way, there is a strong risk that a high number of genuine emails will be tagged because not many people have signed up for the Sender ID service which Microsoft have been trying to get punters to use for several years now.

Let us know what you think of this move in the comments section below.
