Another week, another search engine launches a beta search tool. One day we expect to see some of these tools leave the land of the beta phase, and actually become properly supported and fully functional.
Anyway, this time round it's Yahoo! who are launching the tool. Called Yahoo! Search Subscriptions, the service allows users to search content from sites that offer content on a subscription basis. Previously this content was off limits to search engines, as it was offered to users who had signed up to the subscription service.
Of course, you still need to be a member of said subscription site before the Yahoo! Search Subscriptions system becomes useful. Whilst the search results are displayed to any user, to actually access the content on the site you will need to be a fully paid up member.
Yahoo! believe that their new search tool will be invaluable to members of subscription sites. It is certainly a clever way to show users what they are missing out on on these subscription sites, and possibly drive up membership. Currently seven subscription sites are searchable from the Yahoo! Search Subscriptions site. Expect more to be added in the future.
