ICANN move ahead with .xxx adult domains
Thursday, June 02, 2005 at 13:30 by Rich Kavanagh
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that an independent evaluation process, which began last year, has resulted in a further sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD) application moving to the next stage.

As the process for selecting new sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLDs) continues from a pool of ten applications, ICANN has now entered into commercial and technical negotiations with an additional candidate registry, ICM Registry, Inc. to manage and issue .xxx domain names for adult based web sites.

ICM Registry submitted an application to become the operator of a new registry for the .xxx sTLD. The sponsor of the new TLD is the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (iFOR), a Canadian non-profit entity that is totally independent from ICM.

The .xxx top-level domain will create a clearly identifiable area of the Internet that will both help protect children and families, as well as enable responsible adult-entertainment web site operators to self-organize and self-regulate on a voluntary basis.

ICANN recently announced the designation of two new sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs), .jobs and .travel at the 22nd ICANN International meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

ICANN has also recently entered into commercial and technical negotiations for .cat, .post and .mobi sTLDs.
