Google announces summer of code
Wednesday, June 01, 2005 at 19:21 by Laurence Norah
Google have announced the opening of their Summer of Code, a program designed to introduce students to the world of Open Source Software development.

Google believes that rather than students letting their programming skills go to waste over summer, they would be better off contributing to the greater good by writing an open source application. Google are also providing financial benefits to anyone participating in the program, if they successfully complete an open source project then they will be awarded $4,500.

The deadline for applications to the Google Summer of Code is the 14th of June. A number of established open source organizations are working with Google as part of this program, and they are making lists of ideas available for students who can't think of an idea themselves. If you're interested, head over to the Summer of Code website, where you'll be able to apply to the program, as well as get a full list of terms and conditions.
