Sony PS3 console price revealed?
Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 19:50 by Laurence Norah
Rumours are currently circulating the internet concerning the price of Sony's upcoming gaming console, the Playstation 3. Not due to be launched until sometime next year, it is believed that the console may ship for as little as $370.

This price would be pretty much exactly the same as the original retail price of the Playstation 2 when it was first launched, which in turn had the same retail price as the Playstation 1.

Given the huge amount of technology that is going into the Playstation 3, this price seems pretty cheap. Sony have not as yet confirmed or denied this pricing speculation. Microsoft and Nintendo have also not revealed any pricing information on their upcoming consoles, which may be a factor in how Sony finally prices the Playstation 3. More news as we get it.

Comment # 2 on 25 May 2005 at 20:39 by Anonymous
PS3's going to pound Microsofts XBOX 360 and whatever Nintendo wants to spew out.

Comment # 3 on 25 May 2005 at 20:39 by Anonymous
how can you write " as LITTLE as 370"

Comment # 4 on 25 May 2005 at 20:40 by Loz
it's about the price of a top of the range PC graphics card, which isn't bad considering you get the rest of the package thrown in :)

Comment # 5 on 25 May 2005 at 20:51 by Anonymous
Seems a bit expensive compared to what the Xbox/Gamecube prices where this generation. (both consoles vastely more powerfull then the PS2, dispite being much cheaper). Of course, sony can justfy high prices on "power", regardless of if it actualy is usefull.

As little as $370?

Comment # 7 on 25 May 2005 at 20:56 by Anonymous
$370, not bad for what you'll be getting ... still, those are US dollars, so the price inflates for Australians and Canadians to about $450 approx. I never bought a PS2, only Xbox & Gamecube because I went through 4 PS 1's, and a friend went through 3 PS2's before giving up. Sure hope Sony puts some quality and durability into their new system for a change. I've still not yet had a problem with Xbox or N64 or Gamecube.

"as little as" what are they talking about. Thats not little. I will not be buying this Playstation for 400 bucks.

Comment # 9 on 25 May 2005 at 21:11 by Anonymous
PS3 will "pound" the 360? Lol! Sony's wasting all its time promoting this Cell technology crap, when everyone knows that the three processors in the 360 can run circles around it. Whatever happened to the good ol' days of Sony innovation? Sadly, those days are long dead...

Comment # 10 on 25 May 2005 at 21:12 by poolking
I'm not going to listen to any little tip offs, lets hear it from the horse's mouth first, there is no need to get our heads in a spin with rumour mongering.

Comment # 11 on 25 May 2005 at 21:14 by Anonymous
how much will the xbox cost?

Comment # 12 on 25 May 2005 at 21:23 by Anonymous
This is to comment #9. The XBox 360 has not got 3 processors...it has 1 processor with 3 cores. The cell is 1 processor with 8 cores. There is a vast difference...

Comment # 13 on 25 May 2005 at 21:25 by Anonymous
how the hell do we know the price of the macine that will be out in nex year?

Comment # 14 on 25 May 2005 at 21:38 by Anonymous
Well I am pretty sure that whatever the price it is it will be competitive so that Sony remains on top. Sony will try to do everything they can to not let Xbox take a piece of their share. Based on PS2 and Xbox numbers the PS2 outsold the Xbox 4 to 1 (that is 80 million vs 20 million).

Comment # 15 on 25 May 2005 at 21:58 by Anonymous
"Based on PS2 and Xbox numbers the PS2 outsold the Xbox 4 to 1 (that is 80 million vs 20 million)." Is that because everyone had to buy another PS2 when it broke?

Comment # 16 on 25 May 2005 at 22:09 by Anonymous
when will ms or sony start thinking out of the box? whatever happened to PSP? is it doing good?

Comment # 17 on 25 May 2005 at 22:15 by Anonymous
M$ caught up and out-sold Sony in 2004. and #12 needs to read the spec sheets again. The PS3 only has one core.

Comment # 18 on 25 May 2005 at 22:28 by Anonymous
I wouldn`t buy another playstation I have purchased 2 of ps2s and as soon as the warranty was up they both died and I mean as soon as the warranty was up like clock work I checked online and seems this has happened to plenty of other people as well.

Comment # 19 on 25 May 2005 at 23:00 by Anonymous
Well... at least it's not 500$ and over.... I'm broke

Comment # 20 on 25 May 2005 at 23:21 by Anonymous
I've had my PS2 for however many years without problems. I won't be buying any of the new consoles at the initial offering anyway. I'll wait until I see which games I really want

Comment # 21 on 25 May 2005 at 23:39 by Anonymous
if you ask me, id rather go for a gaming computer than waste my time with these things because computers are always being updated and are compatible with anything if you have the right hardware, but with a system like this its just a cold 500 dollars out of your pocket, probably not worth it, except for the specific titles such as gta... but computers have always had the best games, especially for playing multiplayer.

WHEN WILL THE PLAYSTATION 3 ACTUALLY COME OUT, ON WHAT DATE

Comment # 24 on 26 May 2005 at 18:34 by Anonymous
That price is based on the conversion from Japanese yen (40,000y) to USD ($370). Anyway I don't think Sony has even decided on a price point yet, I bet when 2006 is here Sony is still clueless about a price point. It is just way too hard for them to to find the right price for everybody. They don't want to release it too cheap resulting them loosing vast amounts of money on each console sold, and they don't want to release it too expensive that it puts consumers off. I think it's going to be a 'you pay for what you get for' aproach, meaning that because you gonna have a mini super computer with $1000 worth of graphics cards that are equivelent to what is in the PS3, if we want all this power we're gonna have to pay for it.

Comment # 25 on 26 May 2005 at 18:36 by Anonymous
"Is that because everyone had to buy another PS2 when it broke?" LOL. Even if half of those were re-buys the PS2 would have outsold Xbox by a 2 to 1 margin (20 million vs 40 million). How is that for breakfast. And it is unrealistic to have 50% being defective.

Comment # 26 on 26 May 2005 at 21:59 by Anonymous
To # 13 so you mean Xboxes did not break down. I remember reading about a massive recall due to the Xbox causing fires.

Comment # 27 on 27 May 2005 at 16:38 by Anonymous
Comment #12 - you're wrong. The XBox 360 will have three general purpose cores, each with two hardware threads. Compare this to the crippled Cell protoype which didn't even implement IEEE compliant floating point operations. Sony is talking up TFLOPS - what they don't mention is whether programmers are going to have to deal with innaccurate calculations on a chip with no memory managemant unit without langauge support for writing highly parallel programs. The Cell is still vaporware - don't believe the hype.

IT WILL BE WORTH IT....YOU KNOW IT!

Comment # 30 on 30 May 2005 at 21:40 by Anonymous
for all of you thinking about ps3, check out its controller!!! LMFAO...seriously though, the controller itself would persuade me not to buy ps3. you'd feel like a homosexual or something playing a game with that!

Comment # 31 on 22 June 2005 at 04:54 by Anonymous
i think the ps3 should be the same price as the ps2 launch. But if microsoft and Nintendo have higher pricing we should go the same price as them for competion. but if you asked me i would price it at an afordable price.

Comment # 32 on 28 July 2005 at 18:41 by Anonymous
xbox 360 will rule ps3 is the biggist pile of **** i have ever seen

Let me win one, let me have one, let me keep it.

Comment # 34 on 23 August 2005 at 15:40 by Anonymous
So to summarise here... The Jap built PS3 will be unreliable? And the Chinese built, American designed Xbox 360 will definitley catch fire this time around? The PS3 will be expensive, but cheaper than buying an Xbox 360 AND a high definition blu-ray/HD-DVD player. But wait M$ are already talking about a revision for it BEFORE it comes out. So you might need not to buy a high Def player - but then, games may start to ship on HD-DVD format, so'll have a redundant console... So that's that cleared up then!

This Blu-ray HDDVD stuff drives me nuts. Wish the companies would pick a darn format.

Comment # 47 on 07 July 2006 at 21:29 by Anonymous
to me its not about grapics and price so much really to me its the games that make a console, i think ill get a ps3 so i can play MGS4 and FF13 and jak and dax 4 etc my friend tried to make me buy a 360 and i was tempted cos it looks better than the ps3 has the halo series and huxley looks good and the online gaming is meant to be good too but i thought hey i can trade in my ps2 (of which i had to buy two) and still play all my ps2 games YAY sorf of. also i really annoyed that they are selling core version and a deluxe version. so they can say its gona cost you $$$ when it really is gona cost you $$$$$$ now that bugs me
