PlayStation 3 specs and photos revealed
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 20:16 by Rich Kavanagh
At a press conference held in California yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world's most advanced Cell processor boasting super computer like power.

The PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring a Cell based processor (jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba), graphics processor co-developed by nVidia and SCEI, and XDR type memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM) with a storage capacity of 54 Gigabytes, enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality supporting resolutions of 1080p as standard, far superior to 720p/1080i (progressive scan/interlaced).

With an overwhelming computing power of 2 Teraflops, new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real-time. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time.

In 1994, SCEI launched the original PlayStation, followed by PlayStation 2 in 2000. Over 13,000 titles have been developed now, creating a software market that sells more than 250 million copies annually. PS3 offers backward compatibility enabling gamers to enjoy games from both the PS and the PS2 platforms.

The PlayStation family of products are sold in more than 120 countries and regions around the world. With shipments reaching more than 102 million for PS and approximately 89 million for PS2, they are the undisputed market leaders for home entertainment.

Ken Kutaragi, President and CEO of Sony said,

"SCEI has continuously brought innovation to the world of computer entertainment, such as real-time 3D computer graphics on PlayStation and the world's first 128 bit processor Emotion Engine for PlayStation 2. Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PlayStation 3 is about to begin. Together with content creators from all over the world, SCEI will accelerate the arrival of a new era in computer entertainment."

Sam Houser, President, Rockstar Games added,

"Each time SCEI launches a console, the video games business moves to the next level. With PlayStation 3 it looks as if it might be time for interactive entertainment to become, finally, the world's dominant artistic medium."

Sony also provided us with some high quality images of the new PS3. They are: Front 1, Front 2, Front 3, Front 4 and Rear.

Some of the specifications for the PS3 are:

The shiny curves are nice, but that grey panel under the slot loading drive is ugly as hell. really out of place on that shiny shell. The XBox 360 looks to be cheaper then at $299 basic (or $360 with hdd), and will be out earlier too.IBM has to be seriously loving this use of their PowerPC chips in all the 'next gen' consoles. Laffing all the way to the bank. The only true winner in all of this.

I have to agree I don't care one damn bit what it looks like.. it's going to blow Xbox outta the water... and I don't care if its 7 or 100 controllers as long as the damn things don't have cords.. but everyone has there own opinions

Looks like an excellent console. I'm curious to hear what they are going to do towards the online world. XBox live really is in a class of it's own. I wonder if they'll decide they need to do something similar, or if they'll continue to push it off to the developers. Rob ------ http://geekspeakradio.com Podcast

It's a shame that Sony decided to drop the new boomerang-style controller and instead please gamers that are resistant to change - it looks the same as the old one [old]. I think Nintendo seperated itself from Sony by making the biggest innovations and thereby taking a lot of risk. By innovations I don't mean throwing money at the latest technology available. Still, that doesn't change the fact that Sony have the best 7th generation console [^]
