Yahoo! has launched a new service aimed at making web searching a more personalised experience. The My Web beta service is intended to allow users to save searches and web pages, as well as to share the results of their searches with friends.
This service is a little similar to the recently launched Google search history beta. Both services require the user to log in before the service is available, thus making it more likely that a user will continue to use said service rather than migrating to another service.
Yahoo! are also tightly integrating their various services. Sharing results of your searches with your friends is possible through the Yahoo! instant messaging client, and through the Yahoo! mail service. The My Web beta can also be accessed through the Yahoo! Toolbar.
It would appear that simply offering users search tools is no longer enough in the highly competitive search market. Users would seem to be wanting more from their online experience, and it would appear that companies such as Yahoo! and Google are fighting to make sure that a user uses their services, and continues to keep using them, by requiring them to log in to get the extra value added features.
It will be interesting to see if this trend continues, and if other search providers will go down this route. It should be an interesting battle, and as ever, we'll keep you posted.
