Sophos reveals Dirty Dozen spamming countries
Thursday, April 07, 2005 at 22:23 by David Vreony
Anti-virus and anti-spam firm Sophos has published its latest report into the countries from which most spam messages originate. Researchers at Sophos scanned all spam messages received at its global network of honey-pots throughout the first quarter of 2005.

The top ten spam producing countries are:
  • United States - 35.70%
  • South Korea - 24.98%
  • China (incl. Hong Kong) - 9.71%
  • France - 3.19%
  • Spain - 2.74%
  • Canada - 2.68%
  • Japan - 2.10%
  • Brazil - 1.95%
  • United Kingdom - 1.57%
  • Germany - 1.23%
  • Australia - 1.22%
  • Poland - 1.20%

Gregg Mastoras, senior security analyst at Sophos said,

"The percentage of spam produced by the US has fallen 12% since January compared to other countries. This trend is likely because many ISPs are enforcing policies to ensure that they do not knowingly provide network services to spammers.

Some may speculate that the CAN-SPAM Act has also helped thwart spam, but at this point we haven't seen any evidence that would correlate the drop off to the Act"
