Microsoft release MSN Messenger 7
Thursday, April 07, 2005 at 21:10 by Laurence Norah
Microsoft has released the final version of MSN Messenger 7, which has been available as a beta download from the MSN site for some time now. They have also launched a new version of MSN Spaces, a Microsoft powered blogging service.

The final version of MSN Messenger comes with a new PC to PC video system, called MSN Video Conversation, as well as nifty little add-ons such as the ability to automatically tell your friends what music you are currently playing in Windows Media Player.

The new release also features PC to mobile phone communications, which will allow users to send messages via SMS to friends on their mobile phones. More importantly, the users will be able to respond from their phones back to MSN Messenger. Details of pricing and availability of this service are not available as yet.

More interesting perhaps is the clever use of advertising content that Microsoft has thought up. Users will be able to download advertisers "theme" packs for use in their conversation windows, thus, according to Microsoft, offering users engaging ways to interact with a brand. And hopefully make Microsoft bundles of cash in the process.

As for MSN Spaces, well, it's taken a while for Microsoft to wake up to the blogging phenomenon, but it would appear they've finally caught on to it. The new version is available in 15 languages across 30 markets, and conveniently links into MSN Messenger to allow your IM contacts to know when you've updated your blog.

It looks like Microsoft may have something interesting on their hands, and the clever integration of advertising across their products may mean they can make money out of it as well. If you've tried the new version of MSN Messenger, let us know what you think in our comments section below.
