A study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project has shown that the popularity of podcasting is rapidly increasing, with over 6 million Americans having listened to one at least once.
The term podcasting only really emerged in 2004, when the words iPod and broadcast were merged together to form the new phrase. Essentially it involves users downloading new content, often from an RSS feed, to listen to on their portable music player, which is more often than not an iPod.
In many ways it can be thought of as some kind of online music subscription service, whereby content such as a radio show can be automatically downloaded onto a portable device.
The Pew Internet and American Life Project interviewed 2,201 people for the survey, of which 208 were owners of an MP3 player.
