New Phishing attack targets Yahoo! Messenger
Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 11:21 by Kathleen Hill
Akonix Systems, Inc., a provider of business solutions for secure instant messaging (IM), today alerted Instant Messaging (IM) users to be on their guard from a new phishing threat, specifically targeting users of Yahoo! Messenger.

Phishing is a common practice in email where attackers pose as legitimate institutions, such as banks, and encourage the message recipients to click on a URL. The Web site appears to be official and asks users to enter a confidential user name and password, often times to "confirm their identity".

The most recent IM phishing attack identified by the Akonix Security Center occurred over the Yahoo! Messenger platform. Under this scam, users receive a message from someone on their buddy list, asking them to click on an apparent Yahoo! URL. Once the user enters their credentials on the Web site, the attacker has access to all information stored on their Yahoo! profile.

Francis Costello, chief marketing officer of Akonix Systems said,

"With this year's explosive growth in IM worms and attacks, organizations can no longer afford to leave their IM users unprotected and unmanaged. Phishing scams target sensitive data access utilizing unsuspecting employees, and worms can quickly compromise entire networks. Akonix provides the tools that allow organizations to continue to realize the productivity benefits and cost savings of IM while insulating their employees and networks from the growing threat of IM-based attacks."

Phishing attacks in the past have usually been conducted via email, attacks by Instant Messaging allow the threat to spread across the world in minutes.

So what do you do when this happens? I received an IM from someone on my buddy list. It had a link for me to check out. I linked to yahoos ID and password verication page, entered my info and went to a screen that said "information recorded". I can no longer sign in to my yahoo account. Any ideas on how to fix this?
