Yahoo! Mail, one of the leading providers of free web based mail, has announced that over the next two weeks it will be increasing the amount of mail storage space available to it's users from 250 megabytes to 1 gigabyte, free of charge. This announcement comes nearly a year after the trial of the Google Gmail service was launched, which came with a 1 GB limit as standard.
The reason for the increase is no doubt due to fears over the competition that the Google Gmail service is currently providing, even though Gmail is still in beta. However, the rapid increase recently in the number of invites available to current users of the system has prompted speculation that the Gmail service may be about to launch, perhaps on the first anniversary of it's unveiling.
Yahoo! Mail does not offer free POP3 access to its users as yet, so for now the Gmail account still seems to be the best free option if you are able to get access to one.
The other major player in the free web mail arena, Hotmail, has not made any indication as yet as to whether or not they intend to increase their users web accounts. Many Hotmail users are still stuck with a mere 2 MB account, and if you are one of those users, now is probably time to start looking for alternatives.
