Yahoo IM and AOL IM now on BlackBerry
Monday, March 14, 2005 at 15:00 by Kathleen Hill
Research In Motion (RIM), manufacturers of the popular BlackBerry email device, have announced two new deals today with AOL and Yahoo! in order to offer Instant Messaging (IM) services on the BlackBerry wireless platform.

The Yahoo! Messenger service on the BlackBerry platform will allow consumers to see which friends are online, send and receive instant messages, have multiple conversations at once, participate in online conferences and even send and view emoticons. Yahoo! Messenger will leverage the BlackBerry "push" technology to deliver the instant messaging experience for mobile users.

Similarly, using the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) messaging interface, BlackBerry users will have quick and easy access to their AOL Buddy List to again see which of their friends and family members are online and available to chat.

BlackBerry users will be able to send and receive instant messages over the AIM, ICQ and Yahoo! IM networks.

Mark Guibert, Vice President at RIM said,

"With instant messaging enjoying continued growth, we are very pleased to be working with America Online. AOL's mobile instant messaging services and RIM's unique push-based BlackBerry platform will provide a convenient and powerful communications solution. BlackBerry provides optimized messaging capabilities with its popular keyboards, large screens, intuitive navigation and push-based connectivity. Through our relationship with Yahoo!, BlackBerry users will enjoy another powerful communications option to keep them connected while away from their desk."

Himesh Bhise at AOL said,

"Our new mobile services for BlackBerry will help users stay connected while on the go. We are extremely pleased to welcome BlackBerry users everywhere to our global community."

While Doug Garland at Yahoo! commented,

"We are excited to extend the Yahoo! experience to millions of BlackBerry users around the world. Yahoo! has become an essential part of the lives of millions of its users and by bringing the services they love to these great mobile devices we are making it easier for people to communicate however they want, anywhere, anytime."

In addition to Instant Messaging services, AOL Mail service members will gain access to their e-mail service via BlackBerry and customers can also access Yahoo! Mobile Internet.

You are supposed to have a toolbar choice designated "Friends". I find nothing of the sort on any of your choices. Why do you make it impossible to follow directions given to access this and thus get to view a friend's wedding?

RE: Himesh Bhise at AOL said, "Our new mobile services for BlackBerry will help users stay connected while on the go. HOWEVER, when there's a glitch with the system - no one @ AOL seems to be able to explain to me what the specific problem is regarding my NOT being able to access my AOL email via my Blackberry. It worked for a short while and then discontinued working. I've talked to several reps via AOL - and to date - have NOT had the issue resolved - nor seem to be able to find anyone within the AOL tech organization that knows enough referencing this subject to determine the problem! Certainly sounds like a great innovation - but if it doesn't work - and you don't have the staff on hand to advise your customers where the 'glitch' is..... what's the point of advertising it?

You can go to Blackberry Help within the Blackberry browser and download and install Yahoo, which actually works really well, i have yet to see a option for AOL though...go figure..
