The Mozilla Foundation have released an update to their Firefox web browsing software, bringing the software up to version 1.0.1. The update is designed to improve the stability of the software, and also targets various security problems found in the browser.
One of the key problems addressed with this update is a flaw that had been found in all browsers that supported International Domain Names. This meant that a site author could register a domain with characters that resembled other more common characters, and the browser would show the more common characters in the URL bar. This of course meant that phishing scams were easier to operate.
With over 25 million downloads, Firefox is already making quite a name for itself in the browser market. It can only be hoped that users do not become turned off by the idea that the browser is not entirely secure, as no software really is. Instead, users can gain comfort from the speed in which security flaws such as this are fixed and turned around so quickly.
UPDATE - Leading anti-virus experts Sophos recommend that users update Firefox to the latest version as soon as possible. |
