IBM's $100 million Linux desktop boost
Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 15:38 by Andy Holliday
Technology giants IBM have given another boost to the desktop Linux operating system by pledging another $100 million cash over the next three years.

Up until now, IBM's Linux commitments have mainly been involved in tools, middleware and servers. The Workplace support involves sever provisioning and management of desktops.

IBM pledged to invest a billion dollars in Linux software initiatives and has also recently offered its own initiatives such as the Cloudscape database to the open-source community.

Linux has now gained substantial credibility on servers according to respected solutions providers, but demand for desktop Linux is still way behind the Windows, although if initiatives such as the Linux desktop gain a significant boost, Microsoft will be watching with their usual cautious eye.
