Skype launch VoIP on mobile phones
Sunday, February 13, 2005 at 21:42 by Rich Kavanagh
Mobile phone and PDA manufacturer i-mate and Internet telephony provide Skype Technologies have announced the first wireless mobile handsets preloaded with the Skype Voice over IP (VoIP) software.

The newly launched i-mate PDA2K handsets will be produced with Skype's software preloaded, enabling i-mate owners to use Skype immediately on start-up of their device.

The handset is a dual mode GSM/GPRS Wi-Fi device that will, with the Skype included, allow users to make free voice calls over the Internet to other Skype users, wherever they are in the world.

i-mate founder and chief executive, Jim Morrison, said,

"In line with our continuing commitment to provide customers with the value added benefits they require, this partnership with Skype is a natural way for i-mate to deliver to its customers a fully functional global VoIP service. As i-mate grows across the world we are dedicated to meeting our customers' needs in providing them with only the best available services, Skype, we believe, is one of those."

While Niklas Zennstrom, Skype CEO and co-founder said,

"Skype is committed to working with like-minded companies to innovate and expand platform choice and communications mobility for all our users. Our partnership with i-mate is a step forward for offering Skype on a variety of wireless-enabled devices."

New i-mate handset owners now have the ability to make voice calls over the Internet, through Wireless LAN, to other Skype users free of charge.

The VoIP market has grown rapidly, as both individuals and businesses alike need new communication options, at reduced prices.

my, arent they being nice to people. But considering the purpose of a PDA to be 'mobile' .. Wont the users of said device find themselves being charged for the GPRS data used when utilising the wonderous free Skype phonecalls ? When at hime, yes, im sure it is free. But who uses their PDA solely in their home (or office, assumingly equiped with Wi-Fi too) ?

There are plenty of cell phone providers offering unmetered GPRS now. Besides, open wireless hot spots are every 500 yards in most towns. God bless all those offices who can't secure their Wi-Fi too :)

I have had free GRPS for over a year now. I am surprised some companies can still charge for it ! Does anyone know if the Skype software will work on a Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone ?

OK in easy to understand words for the above and ReDuX: 1 Most of us who care to look around for a decent deal get GPRS unmetered. 2 SKype over unrestricted WiFi hotspots gives yuo very cheap Ip to landline and standard mobile calls plus free Skype to Skype calls. 3 Which of these benefits don't you understand?

As the article says, the phone imate launched can use Skype over Wi-Fi and it is only a matter of time before Skype is available on Windows Mobile and Symbian based phones too.

all this is good and well for you, but how does a regular sprint user set this up on their phone to allow cell to skype-to cell connections? Please apprise me of this "hidden" understanding"..Mark
