IBM, Sony and Toshiba unveil the Cell
Tuesday, February 08, 2005 at 20:09 by Andy Barker
IBM, Sony and Toshiba have lifted the lid on the Cell chip, which they hope will power the next generation of computers and home appliances providing serious competition for the x86.

The processor which has a multi-core architecture is described as being a "super computer on a chip". It will also be OS neutral and will be capable of running multiple operating systems at the same time.

The announcement highlights the fact that the chip has already been produced in prototype form and that this prototype Cell chip has achieved speeds in excess of the magic 4Ghz barrier, which Intel recently failed to achieve with their Pentium 4 core.

It is widely believed that the Cell chip will be present in the next generation Playstation (the PS3) and with it's architecture which is "designed to support multiple operating systems, such as conventional operating systems (including Linux), real-time operating systems for computer entertainment and consumer electronics applications" it will no doubt find its way in to many more appliances around the home.

With backing of Sony and Toshiba there is little doubt that the Cell will have every chance of breaking through in the home appliance market, which is seen by many analysts as a future boom area for technology companies.

Finally...as a result of this ...we may get a real competitor to Microsoft...they must be getting nervous with a nuetral chip going to market. This can be nothing but good news for us "ordinary joe" consumers.

when will it be available to the consumer?

Since Microsoft Xbox 3 is going to use PowerPC as well, it seems that finally PowerPC era has begun.

#2: I dont think you grasp the concept of Cell. This will make the XBox2 look like a gameboy. This announcement is a year late acording to Sony, who have been developing this technology for some time. Check the net for some of sony engineer's quotes. The guy working on it is amazed. Now that takes some doing. To compare this technology to SkyNet isnt far off honestly. Only without the AI and military control loonacy. It is scalable, it is fast as hell, and it is a honkin big technology step. I read somewhere concomers will get/use these by 2008, but we'll see.

Directed to Comment #11 Everything you've stated appears in good order, but I believe that the release date is slightly sooner than 2008... I've heard rumors that It may be available as close as 2006.

To comment #3: At first, the chip will be at least $2000 U.S so it won't lower electronic prices. But overtime, it will eventually go down and in 10 years it may be worth $500

In response to comment #9, experts seem to think that making MacOS run on it will be easy. More of a licensing question than a technical one. If you want the full technical details, the have been disclosed in the patent that IBM filed on the new chip design. See http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6779049.html

Comment #13 was pretty amusing. Do you actually think these people are so stupid business-wise, they'd try to sell a $2000 CPU in a world of $500 complete computers? The MacOS "WILL FAIL" was ten times as funny, however. That's like saying if it doesn't appeal to the "Green Party" there's no way it could be elected president. I can't figure out who's the most self-absorbed ... Bill Gates, or people who actually bought an Apple. *L*

Why do people say "XBox 2 will beat PS3"? You don't know that... and looking at industry forecasts the PS3 will outsell the XBOX2. Put your emotions away and think about things logically!! Also the market is Global, not just in the USA. Sony have sold nearly 80 million PS2's around the world. I believe MS have sold around 23 million XBOX's. Just keep things in perspective!
