| Google to start selling domain names ? |
| Wednesday, February 02, 2005 at 22:59 by Rich Kavanagh |
Internet search engine giant Google Inc. have become an ICANN accredited registrar of domain names.
Listed at number 895 in the Registrar ID list, Google look set to add yet another service to their ever-expanding portfolio.
ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, have approved Google to register and sell Top Level Domain names (TLDs) including .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net, .org and .pro
With reported revenue in excess of one billion dollars in the last three months alone, Google could well afford to continue with their free services.
Domain names like ghosting.com and gdomains.com have already been registered by other companies.
This news however, raises more questions than it provides answers.
Could this be the one service that Google actually charge Joe Public for ?
Is this see the start of free domain names and free hosting by Google, with them covering costs using the AdSense programme ?
Will firms like Microsoft enter into the market ?
Amazon became an approved registrar in March 2003, why have they not done anything with it ?
Regardless of their reasons for registrar accreditation, Google will no doubt continue to innovate.

|
|
| Google are the number one brand for a reason... |

Well thats the little man stuffed if its true. Perhaps there is some other business benefit to this action ? In house control or other cost controls ? |
|
|
| No one has said this free or a premium service so let's leave the speculation and wait for concrete word from Google. |

| At comment # 4 - yeah no one has proof, but wouldn't it be great of they offered all in one services, domain names, hosting, blogging, picasso images, gmail, dns etc ! |

Something I found quite interesting is becoming seemingly apparent. If you check out this link: http://oak.psych.gatech.edu/~epic/
, you'll find that this is sort of the direction google is headed; to the top of the internet service food chain. |

Google already charges for keyhole (www.keyhole.com)

| Free domain names with Adsense would be a great idea- many webmasters do use Adsense anyway, so it makes sense. Lots of sense here.... |
