| Google web browser getting closer? |
| Friday, January 28, 2005 at 13:00 by Laurence Norah |
Google have once again started the rumour and speculation mill going as to whether or not they are in the process of creating a web browser. This time the rumours have started because Google have started hiring Firefox developers.
So far Google have hired two of the developers who worked on Firefox, Ben Goodger who was Firefox's lead engineer, and more recently Darin Fisher who was responsible for the cookie's and permissions part of Firefox. As well as this, Google have registered the domain name gbrowser.com.
We reported last year on the speculation that Google may have been looking to launch a browser, and this recent uptake in skilled browser developers certainly seems to help confirm these rumours. A browser from Google would definitely be an interesting addition to the marketplace, especially if they are able to use the knowledge gleaned from the excellent Firefox system.
Of course, Google may have no interest in creating a browser. We think however that this is unlikely. If Google can make everyone who surfs the web use their browser, rather than just their search engine, then the potential for them to deliver targeted marketing to users is that much greater.
The privacy implications are also greater. Google would be able to track your usage of the Internet on a much wider scale than they are currently able to. We can only hope they stick to their corporate mantra of not being evil. We certainly look forward to seeing what Google produce, if indeed they are working on a browser. As we hear more we'll let you know.

| Google may be Microsoft II in the long run, but I'm sceptical about the likelihood of them achieving quite such widespread dominance. Meanwhile if they bring out a Mozilla-baed browser they'll do a great job helping reclaim the web for open standards based browsing defined by W3C (rather than Microsoft). |

| Google do right to base their browser on Firerox/Mozilla if they do of course.
Firefox may have gotten its feature ideas from Opera, but Firefox does it right.
And being fully standards compliant, I praise Google on their choice.
Though im not sure what they plan to add to it, it already has google and any other search available with simple plugins.
And infact built into some skins.
I'd love to know what unique features they dream up. Otherwise I'm likely to stick with Firefox, like many others I suspect. |

I think the phrase "don't put all your eggs in one basket" is appropriate here. Do we want another Microsoft, I will stick with Firefox |
