Firefox, the open source browser from The Mozilla Foundation, is slowly encroaching on Internet Explorer's market share, according to a report published by online analytics firm WebSideStory.
During the month of December 2004, usage of Firefox rose by 0.9 percentage points to a healthy 5 percent. Although that may not sound a lot compared to IE's market share of just over 90 percent, this rise is quite significant when one considers that Firefox has only been available in a stable form since November of last year.
Over 19 million people have already downloaded the Firefox browser, figures helped in part by a successful marketing campaign that the Mozilla Foundation ran around the time of Firefox's stable release. Users are clearly impressed by Firefox's small footprint and innovative features such as tabbed browsing.
We're not sure what the future holds for Firefox. A growing market share is a good thing, and anything that forces Microsoft to do some work on Internet Explorer has to be applauded. We just hope that the Firefox product will be able to keep evolving and pushing the boundaries to stay one step ahead of the game.
