Sony PSP a success, web browser on the way
Friday, January 21, 2005 at 17:00 by Laurence Norah
Sony's foray into the handheld gaming market has gone incredibly well, with Sony's Ken Kutaragi announcing that since it's launch in December 2004 over 800,000 units have been shipped. This is particularly impressive considering that so far the PSP is only available in Japan, with American and European launches not coming until March of this year.

As a result of this high demand Sony are intending to increase production of the PSP to around two million units a month, from the current capability of just under a million a month.

Kutaragi has also been commenting on possible future additions to the PSP. The already well specified device will possibly be extended to include phone functionality, as well as web browsing capabilities.

This device is looking to make the Nintendo DS look redundant already, and neither device has been out that long. We'll have to see how this battle pans out, and as always, we'll keep you informed.
