| Apple finally launch the iPod Shuffle |
| Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 22:40 by Rich Kavanagh |
At the Macworld Expo today, Apple introduced the iPod Shuffle, a mini iPod.
Using the near legendary shuffle feature of the iPod, the new iPod Shuffle is smaller and lighter than a pack of gum and is so light it can be worn around the neck.
As you'd expect, the iPod Shuffle works seamlessly with iTunes and uses an AutoFill feature to automatically selects songs from a user's music library to fill up the iPod Shuffle with just one click.
iPod Shuffle is the most affordable iPod ever made and is available in two models. The 512MB version can hold up to 120 songs and the 1GB model can hold 240. The prices are $99 and $149 respectively.
Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO said,
"iPod shuffle is smaller and lighter than a pack of gum and costs less than $100. With most flash-memory music players users must use tiny displays and complicated controls to find their music; with iPod shuffle you just relax and it serves up new combinations of your music every time you listen."
Both the iPod Shuffle models are available now.

I'm still worried about the price. I was hoping that the 512MB Shuffle would be $79 and the 1GB Shuffle would be $99. However, without actually touching the product, I can see that this flash MP3 player looks great. Although I own an iPod, I am tempted to buy one, but I'll just save for a possible Mac Mini or a PC laptop.
The device probably should have a touch wheel instead of a button-wheel. Though the device is 1/3 the size of an iPod Mini, it doesn't come with a Power Adapter. Some PCs, for whatever reason, don't charge the iPod when connected through FireWire/USB2.0, and that might be a bit of a turn off for some people. Plus, there is no dock connector, you'll need to buy a seperate dock for it(though the dock for the iPod shuffle is pretty cute). This means that some devices that utilize the dock connector like iCarPlay will NOT work, but Apple does offer an accessory that plays songs through the headphone jack via an FM transmitter. Though expect the sound quality to dip a bit since sound is filter through the headphone jack instead of being played directly from the dock connector.
Although after being impressed with the specs and offers of the Mac Mini(you can upgrade the Mac Mini to a more powerful machine) at the $499 end, the Shuffle is a bit disappointing since the price is still relatively high compared to other flash MP3 players of similar stature. |
