| Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 21:28 by Rich Kavanagh |
As the rumours predicted last year, Apple have launched a sub $500 iMac.
At the Macworld Expo today, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO unveiled the Mac Mini, the cheapest Mac ever at only $499.
The Mac Mini is just two inches tall and weighs under three pounds. A picture of the front and back of the machine are available on the Apple web site.
Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO said,
"Starting at just $499, Mac mini is the most affordable way to enjoy Mac OS X and iLife. Just plug in your display, keyboard and mouse and you've got an incredibly compact Mac for a price that almost anyone can afford."
Specifications for the Mac Mini are either a 1.25GHz or 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 processor and an ATI Radeon 9200 (32MB) graphics chip. Both models feature a slot-loading drive for watching DVDs and burning CDs. An 80GB hard disk drive is also included. One FireWire, two USB ports, a DVI interface that supports VGA, Ethernet and a 56K Modem are also built in.
Mac OS X "Panther" is also pre-installed on every Mac Mini.
The 1.25GHz Mac Mini will be available in the US on Saturday, January 22 and worldwide on Saturday, January 29 at $499 while the 1.42GHz Mac Mini will be priced at $599.

There's another strategy ... if you have multiple systems (e.g., including a mini-Mac) on your desk and they all have monitors and you don't want to have multiple keyboards 'n meeces, you should take a look at http://www.derman.com/KMremoteControl/KMrC-Overview.html.
Simply put, KMremoteControl is a software keyboard/mouse switcher (i.e., KVM without the "M" part). I've been using KMremoteControl for quite some time (in a different setup) and it works really well. This is a great way to add a mini-Mac! Hope this helps.
