Stanford Wallace, better known as the "Spam King" or "Spamford", will stop infecting computers with advertising programs until a federal lawsuit against him is resolved.
Under an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Wallace is required to send online ads only to people who visit his web sites.
We reported back in October last year when Wallace was first charged with using spyware to infiltrate computers, overwhelming them with ads and other programs. Once infected, he would then try to sell programs he claimed would fix the problems. The government said the remedies do not work.
Laura Sullivan, lawyer for the FTC said,
"The commission does believe this is great relief for consumers until the matter is ultimately resolved in the courts. This provides wonderful protection for consumers in the interim."
No trial date has been set.
The FTC has also issued some tips for consumers to help them prevent Spyware from being installed on their machines.
