Apple to launch sub $500 iMac?
Friday, December 31, 2004 at 11:14 by Laurence Norah
There is a great deal of speculation circulating the internet at the moment based around the fact that Apple are planning to launch a cheap version of their iMac.

Rumour has it that Apple intend to roll out this possibly sub $500 machine at it's trade show at the beginning of 2005, although details from Apple are rather non-existant at the moment.

This would certainly be a new market for Apple to be moving into, as they are traditionally associated with more expensive, almost "designer" computer models. However, with the widespread adoption of the iPod, a whole horde of new Apple's fans has been born. These are people who may have previously been put off by the high price of Apple's computers in the past, but a cheaper offering may be all that is required to change their mind.

Apple have not made any comment on the speculation so far, to either deny or confirm the rumours. However, we expect to know either way sometime in January, and we'll let you know as soon as we do.

Well a good quality alienware/scan/Dell XPS costs as much as a power mac and often if all you want to do is type a letter, browse the web or listen to some tunes a £300 PC plus a screen/speakers is more than enough.
It really all depends on what you want out of it. And if a cheap pretty box is all you want then Apple are about to make a killing.
