Hotmail ditch McAfee in favour of Trend Micro
Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 21:52 by Rich Kavanagh
Microsoft has chosen Trend Micro to protect popular email service MSN Hotmail from viruses, in favour of McAfee.

Trend Micro said the agreement with Hotmail will allow them to provide anti-virus scanning and cleaning protection for the 187 million email accounts Hotmail currently hosts.

Hotmail users will receive automatic protection anytime they send and receive email attachments via Trend Micro's automatic scanning and detection services.

Phil Holden at Microsoft said,

"MSN is focused on providing a safer online experience for consumers, and we continue to make investments in this area. We're pleased to work with Trend Micro, with its deep anti-virus expertise, to expand the email protection of our Hotmail customers. Today MSN Hotmail is the only free global email service that provides anti-virus scanning and cleaning for its customers. We see this offering as important in helping protect our Hotmail customers while also guarding members of the overall Hotmail community and the friends and family they email."

McAfee still get a look in though, they will continue to run anti-virus and some firewall services for premium Microsoft e-mail users.

Shares in McAfee closed at 6.8% down after the announcement, while Trend Micro shares were up 8.5%.
