Popular BitTorrent site SuprNova closes down
Monday, December 20, 2004 at 21:06 by Rich Kavanagh
Popular file-sharing sites SuprNova.org and Phoenix-Torrents.com have shut down.

We reported only last week on the scores of web sites that had been shut down by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) because they helped relay illegal movies across online file-sharing networks using the BitTorrent network.

One of the most popular was SuprNova, who boasted tens of thousands of files for download.

However, according to a statement on the SuprNova.org web site, they closed down through their own choice, rather than the MPAA's choice. A message left on their site read,

"We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links. We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything."

Another popular BitTorrent site to close in the last few days was Phoenix-Torrents.com, a similar message on their site said,

"Due to the current climate and current conditions the unfortunate, difficult and sad decision has been taken to close Phoenix Torrents down. We've had our ups and downs during the last 14 months, but mostly its been a ball. Without your support it wouldn't have been possible so we would like to thank all the members, visitors and supporters of Phoenix Torrents during this time, and wish the other torrent sites in the community every success."

Both sites however vowed to keep their message forums and IRC chat open for members to keep in touch with each other.
