| Interplan fined $150k for illegal software |
| Thursday, December 02, 2004 at 20:01 by Rich Kavanagh |
Orlando based architecture firm Interplan LLC have been fined $150,000 by the Business Software Alliance.
The Business Software Alliance (BSA), a watchdog group representing the world's leading software manufacturers, presented the bill to Interplan after they conducted a self-audit and were found to be severely lacking in licenses for Autodesk and Microsoft products.
In addition to making their payment, Interplan agreed to delete any unlicensed copies, purchase replacement software and strengthen their software management practices.
Bob Kruger, Vice President of Enforcement for the BSA said,
"BSA encourages organizations to examine their software management programs to ensure that they are sufficient to prevent unlicensed software use. These settlements demonstrate that it is actually more expensive to copy software than to acquire a sufficient number of licenses in the first place."
Firms concerned or in doubt about their own licensing are recommended to visit the BSA web site where they can download free software auditing tools.
